What to do when macOS says Service Recommended

Battery warning messages, cycle counts, swelling symptoms and when to stop using a MacBook before repair.

The Service Recommended message usually means macOS has detected reduced battery capacity or behaviour outside the expected range. It is common on older batteries, but it should not be ignored if the case or trackpad has started to lift.

Stop using the MacBook if the lower case is bulging, the trackpad feels stiff, or the keyboard deck is being pushed upward. Those signs can indicate battery swelling.

A battery replacement should include health checks before and after fitting, plus charging and sleep/wake testing so you know the machine is stable before it comes back.
